Don’t get caught out - London’s Direct Vision Standard enforced from 1st March 2021

In London, HGVs are disproportionately involved in fatalities with pedestrians and cyclists so a Direct Vision Standard (DVS) safety scheme is being introduced.

The aim of the DVS scheme is to help improve road safety in the city, particularly with regard to HGV drivers' visibility of vulnerable road users.

All vehicles over 12 tonnes GVW either entering or operating in the zone will be affected, and will need to be either at least 1-star rated or comply with the scheme’s Safe System and have a Safety Permit in place.

Permits are free of charge. If your vehicle meets the minimum one-star rating, you will automatically be granted a Safety Permit BUT you still have to apply.

You can apply via the TfL website.

The DVS zone will be enforced 7 days a week, 24 hours a day using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras – both fixed and mobile.

If you don’t follow the new rules, you could face a fine of up to £550 per day.
