Get to Know... Andy Spencer, one of our HGV drivers

Andy Spencer talks about himself and his job as one of our HGV Drivers; moving vehicles to and from customers and workshops, and between our depots.

Where are you from originally?

Rawtenstall in Lancashire, the red rose county.

What was your first job?

Yardman at Brian Currie trucks and trailers in Milton Keynes.

What job(s) did you have before joining DGTT?

Driver at Brian Currie and Valeter at City Trucks in Milton Keynes.

When did you join DGTT?

October 2008.

What was your first job at DGTT?

Yard Shunter, which involved keeping the yard clean and tidy, and getting vehicles washed.

What’s your current job and what does it involve?

I work as an HGV Driver and I deliver and collect vehicles to and from customers, workshops and our other branches. I get to drive some high-quality vehicles and meet lots of people.  We’re a great team and we all take a professional and courteous approach to our jobs, while also having some fun!

What’s been the highlight of your time at DGTT?

Driving an 18-tonne curtainside as part of a convoy of modern and historic trucks at Peter Dawson’s 80th birthday celebrations. We all had a great day!

Who or what has been the main influence in your career?

It’s difficult to pick out one individual. I’ve worked with lots of people over the years who have influenced my career. I’m especially grateful to those in Dawsongroup who have helped me overcome challenges caused by my dyslexia, and making sure that it’s never held me back.

What significant changes have you seen in the business during your time at DGTT?

The quality of the vehicles we run these days is much better than 14 years ago. They’re also much younger and fitted with much more high-spec technology.

What do you do in your spare time?

I like to watch films, visit my family and listen to amateur radio, which enables me to listen to people from all over the world.

What’s on your bucket list?

To see the world! To go to and experience as many places as possible.

What’s your favourite film or film genre?

Rise of the Foot Soldier – a great film about a football hooligan and member of the infamous Inter-City Firm (ICF) who becomes a member of a notorious gang of criminals operating in London and Essex in the late 1980s.

What annoys you in life?

Lazy people! I like to be busy and I don’t understand people who don’t! My motto is: do the job and do it the best you can.

What’s your biggest regret?

Not seeing enough of my mum when she was alive – probably the kind of regret many of us have, and one that teaches us to keep close to our families.
