The announcement by Toyota Motor Europe, that it has joined forces with the Dutch VDL Groep to break into the market for heavy-duty hydrogen trucks, using Toyota’s fuel cell technology, is an interesting one.

It comes almost alongside the declaration by Quantron and Ford Trucks of a letter of intent to produce hydrogen fuel cell trucks based on a Ford F-Max. When players like these get more active, it can only speed the process of the decarbonisation of the road logistics sector.

It is said that the lower weight of hydrogen systems could allow heavier operational payloads, while its rapid refuelling time means hydrogen trucks can be refilled just as quickly as diesel vehicles.

It all makes for exciting and challenging times for operators. Dawsongroup continues to help operators on their journey to net zero by investing in emerging technology vehicles, allowing operators a chance to find out for themselves just what might be involved going forward.

And we’re able to do it through our Smarter Asset Strategy that offers risk-free, cost-effective contract hire, leasing and rental options.
