Get to Know… Ian Maddock, our Transport & Logistics Manager

Ian Maddock talks about his career, his time in the RAF, and how he’s a dab hand with a sewing machine!

Where are you from originally?

Milton Keynes

What was your first job?

I spent 14 years in the RAF as a Survival Equipment Fitter (I joined when I was 17). I spent time in the Falkland Islands, Kosovo and various bases around the UK assisting pilots on a daily basis with anything from flying suits to parachutes and yes, I can use a sewing machine!

What job(s) did you have before joining DGTT?

When I left the RAF, I tried my hand at being an estate agent, but it really wasn’t for me. I then went into logistics with Biffa (waste management) and onto Elliott Hire (modular building hire in Ampthill) before joining DGTT.

When did you join DGTT?

January 2011.

What was your first job at DGTT?

Logistics Analyst & Controller - I assisted Fleet Services with the authorisation of bookings etc and planned the fleet drivers’ daily work.

What’s your current job and what does it involve?

I’m the company’s Transport & Logistics Manager, which involves ensuring that the Operator Licence compliance for our TCS, MH and EMC businesses is adhered to. I also plan the work of six DGTT fleet drivers (and depot drivers when the need arises) as well as assist with any sales programmes, inter-depot movements and any new trailers that need to be spread around our depot network. In addition, I help Fleet Services, when required.

What’s been the highlight of your time at DGTT?

I'm happy how my career has progressed since starting with the company. There are no real highlights to note, but I do enjoy completing large-scale movement projects for depots or sales programmes.

Who or what has been the main influence in your career?

Having spent time in the Airforce, it taught me a lot of life skills, which I believe have helped me progress through my various roles since leaving.

What significant changes have you seen in the business during your time at DGTT?

Dawsongroup has expanded into a lot of new ventures since I started and it’s impressive that it’s established a truly global presence.

What do you do in your spare time?

I like going to watch live football whether it’s at Northampton, Wembley or Barcelona, but I also like time at home in the garden or watching TV.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself

I’m currently in my third marriage!

What’s on your bucket list?

To travel across the USA along Route 66 in a camper van. Route 66 runs from Chicago all the way to Santa Monica in California and covers nearly 2,500 miles. Unfortunately, I don’t own a camper van at the moment, but I’d love to get one in the future.

What’s your favourite film or film genre?

I like anything from comedy to drama, but will also sometimes sit and watch a romcom. I have a couple of favourite films: Escape to Victory (a 1981 film about Allied prisoners of war in a German POW camp during the Second World War and who play a football match against a German team) and Shawshank Redemption, a 1994 film starring Morgan Freeman and set in Shawshank State Penitentiary. It tells the story of two inmates who get involved in a money-laundering operation led by one of the prison wardens.

What annoys you in life?

I try not to get too annoyed with things in life, but can get frustrated when someone tries to pull the wool over my eyes; I prefer straightforward honesty.

What’s your biggest regret?

I don’t have any regrets in my life; I look at it as a learning curve when things don’t quite go to plan.
